A Bag Filter (or Fabric Filter) is a pollution control device that removes particulates out of air or gas released from commercial processes or combustion. It is widely used in dust collection systems.
⚙️ Working Principle
Dust-laden air enters the filter housing.
The air passes through filter bags (fabric tubes).
Dust particles are trapped on the outer surface of the bags.
Clean air exits through the outlet.
Periodically, the bags are cleaned (manually or automatically).
🧪 Types of Bag Filters
Shaking Type – Manual/Mechanical shaking for cleaning bags.
Reverse Air Type – Uses low-pressure air to reverse airflow and dislodge dust.
Pulse Jet Type – Uses high-pressure short bursts of air (pulse) to clean bags. Most common.
🔩 Main Components
Part | Description |
---|---|
Filter Bags | Fabric (typically polyester, Nomex, etc.) used to trap dust. |
Cages | Support for filter bags. |
Dust Hopper | Collects removed dust at the bottom. |
Cleaning System | Shaking, reverse air, or pulse jet air. |
Inlet & Outlet Ducts | For entry and exit of air. |
Control Panel | Automation and monitoring system. |
📐 Design Parameters
Air-to-Cloth Ratio: Airflow rate ÷ Filter area (m³/m²/min)
Temperature: Choose fabric based on operating temperature.
Particle Size: Filter selection depends on dust properties.
Differential Pressure: Indicates pressure drop across bags.
✅ Applications
Cement Plants
Steel & Foundries
Chemical Industry
Power Plants
Food Processing
Pharmaceuticals
🔍 Advantages
High efficiency (99.9%+ for particles >1 micron)
Suitable for dry dust
Can handle large volumes of air
